Who we are looking for

JOB TITLE: Fire Officer
LOCATION: Warrnambool, Victoria
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: 1.0 FTE, Fixed term to 30 June 2026
SALARY: $71,100 to $86,800 per annum + super
REPORTS TO: Healthy Country Manager
IDENTIFICATION: NOT a Designated Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appointment

Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation (EMAC) is seeking a Fire Officer to build Eastern Maar Citizens’ skills, capacity, and knowledge in fire management — and strengthen understanding of traditional fire practices across partner agencies.

This role supports Eastern Maar’s self-determination by embedding cultural fire practices and contributing to regional partnerships, fire management policies, and programs that protect and restore Country.

What you’ll be doing

On a day-to-day basis, you will:

  • Build Eastern Maar Citizens’ skills, capacity, and knowledge in fire management.
  • Promote and share traditional fire knowledge across government and partner agencies.
  • Represent EMAC in regional fire management partnerships, acting as the key contact point for EMAC.
  • Coordinate training, development, and deployment of Eastern Maar Citizens in general firefighting.
  • Plan and coordinate cultural and ecological burns, including pre- and post-fire surveys.
  • Support small-scale seed collection and revegetation activities.
  • Advocate for Eastern Maar cultural rights and contribute to policy and practice discussions on fire management.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with, influence, and build relationships with stakeholders.
  • Understanding of natural resource management, including the use and management of fire in the landscape.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and deliver tasks effectively.
  • Commitment to and appreciation of Eastern Maar culture, values, and heritage.
  • Ability to work respectfully and sensitively with Eastern Maar Citizens and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.

Other requirements include:

  • Holder of a Working with Children Check
  • Holder of a Current Victorian Driver’s Licence. 
  • Undertaken a National Police Check for Employment Purposes within the last 3 months
