We are seeking two Eastern Maar community members to join the Moyjil Future Protection Committee.
The Committee will play an important role in advising Warrnambool City Council on the protection and management of Moyjil, helping guide the development of a new Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for this highly significant cultural landscape.
Moyjil is a place of deep cultural importance. Through this project, we will ensure that Eastern Maar cultural knowledge, values and priorities are at the forefront of future planning, decision-making and site management.

About the Project
We have secured funding to review and prepare a new Conservation Management Plan for Moyjil Aboriginal Place.
The updated plan will refresh the existing CMP and support EMAC and Warrnambool City Council in strengthening the long-term protection, understanding and management of the site.
The project will address a range of challenges affecting Moyjil, including:
- Degrading infrastructure
- Natural erosion
- Tourism impacts
- Climate change challenges
The Moyjil Future Protection Committee will work collaboratively with:
- EMAC staff
- Warrnambool City Council (WCC)
- First Peoples-State Relations
- Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change (DEECA)
The Committee will also be supported by the Eastern Maar Biocultural Landscapes Subcommittee.
What is the Moyjil Future Protection Committee?
The Moyjil Future Protection Committee will provide advice to Warrnambool City Council regarding the future management of the site and contribute to the development of the Conservation Management Plan.
The Committee represents an opportunity for Eastern Maar people to help shape how Moyjil is cared for into the future, ensuring that cultural values and knowledge remain central to management approaches and decisions.
What Will Participation Involve?
If selected, Committee members will bring their cultural authority, knowledge and perspectives to guide the development of the Conservation Management Plan.
As holders of significant cultural knowledge relating to this important site, Committee members will play a central role in:
- Informing decision-making
- Reviewing project materials and recommendations
- Providing cultural guidance and perspectives
- Ensuring Eastern Maar cultural values, histories and priorities are embedded throughout the Conservation Management Plan and its ongoing management
Committee members will work collaboratively with project partners while helping ensure that Eastern Maar cultural knowledge remains a key foundation for the future protection of Moyjil.
For quorum we will require a minimum of one community member and one EMAC staff member be present at all meetings.
Time Commitment
EMAC anticipates a commitment of approximately 12 months.
A minimum of four meetings is expected during this period, with meeting arrangements to be determined collaboratively by the Committee.
Participation is expected to include:
- At least one meeting on site at Moyjil
- Remaining meetings held at the EMAC office in Warrnambool
- Virtual attendance options where required

We are only seeking applications from Eastern Maar citizens.
Are There Any Risks?
We do not foresee any significant risks associated with participation.
Committee discussions may involve sharing cultural knowledge or perspectives. Members are encouraged to contribute only what they feel is appropriate and comfortable to share.
Am I Required to Share Everything I Know?
No.
Participation is entirely voluntary, and members are not expected to share any knowledge that they consider sensitive, restricted, or inappropriate for this context.
How Will My Contributions Be Used and Respected?
All contributions will be treated respectfully and in accordance with cultural protocols.
EMAC will work to ensure that any knowledge shared is used appropriately, acknowledged respectfully, and only used with permission where required.
Will I Be Compensated?
Yes.
Committee members will be supported by EMAC and appropriately remunerated for their time, expertise and contributions.
