VICTORIAN ABORIGINAL HERITAGE PLACE REGISTER FOR NGOORAT
The Victorian Government Heritage Services has added Ngoorat (Mt Noorat) to the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Register.
The registration, conducted in accordance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006, defines an Aboriginal place as an area in Victoria or the coastal waters of cultural heritage significance to Aboriginal people generally, or of a particular community or group of Aboriginal people.
Our people’s association with Ngoorat stretches back thousands of years, it’s an important part of who and what we are. And we have always maintained our connection, understanding, knowledge of and love of it. The registration recognises Ngoorat’s significance to our community, that our stories, songs, and dances retain cultural knowledge of the mountain, and our relationship with this important place.
The Department of Premier and Cabinet Heritage Services First Peoples-State Relations will send letters to landholders in the registered area informing them of the change. The map attached outlines the area registered as Aboriginal place VAHR 7421-0188 and VAHR 7421-0246.
Ngoorat’s inclusion on the Aboriginal Heritage Register, the result of an independent CHMP assessment, is unlikely to affect the daily routine of landholders’ use of the land or impact their right to control property access. But landholders may require a cultural heritage permit or other authorisation under the Act for land use change or property development.
Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation as the appointed Registered Aboriginal Party for the area of Noorat, and the approval body in relation to cultural heritage management plans and cultural heritage permits applications, will provide information about the registration and its effects on its website.
